Over the last year or so, LTC insurance carriers introduced products that have gender-specific rates like life insurance. However, unlike life insurance where men pay more because they die earlier, with LTC insurance, women pay more because they live longer (and subsequently end up claiming more as well).
Sounds fair, right? Well, there is a little bit of a backlash against gender-based pricing. Some states, like Montana, have outright banned gender based pricing. California is considering such a ban as well. In addition, if you are buying LTC through an employer sponsored program, gender-based pricing is also not allowed.
The interactive map below shows states where LTC products from major carriers are available (mouse over states to use). Usually, unisex states remain because new products have not been approved. For single females who live in these states, they may still be able to lock in unisex pricing. But they should be encouraged to consider it before additional changes are made!
